PJ Harvey has achieved her first number one album with latest LP, The Hope Six Demolition Project.

According to the Official Charts Company (OCC), the singer-songwriter’s ninth studio collection enters at number one, beating her previous best, 1993’s number three-peaking Rid Of Me.

PJ Harvey has managed to hold off competition from Adele’s 25, which remains at number two after 22 consecutive weeks in the top five.

Some of PJ Harvey’s latest record was created over four weeks in front of a live audience at Somerset House. The Recording in Progress project was staged in a box behind one-way mirrored glass with her long-time collaborators Flood and John Parish.

Elsewhere in the charts, the recent news regarding the death of Prince has also had an impact.

His hits package Ultimate, which originally peaked at number six in 2007, re-enters the Official Albums Chart at number 10. The Very Best of Prince, which hit number two in 2001, goes back in at number 18.

The latest early sales figures provided by the Official Charts Company indicate that Prince is also expected to take the top spot in both charts this coming Friday (29 April).

Data from the first day of the chart week indicates that his 1984 anthem Purple Rain is a strong early contender for the top-selling single.

In the album charts, The Very Best Of is on course to take the top spot.
