Mercury Music Prize winner PJ Harvey, composer Mike Batt and singer songwriter Adele were named in the Queen’s 2013 birthday honours.

The songwriters and musicians were just some of the 1,000 plus recipients of awards, which are presented to recognise ‘the achievements and service of extraordinary people right across the United Kingdom’.

Both Adele and PJ Harvey received MBEs while Mike, the composer and producer behind the Wombles pop group, was presented with an LVO (Lieutenant of the Royal Victoria Order), a special award for Services To The Royal Household.

He said: ‘I was completely shocked - in a great way - to be told of this honour. It's particularly nice that the appointment to the Royal Victorian Order is in the direct gift of The Queen. I have obviously done something that has been recognised, but I can't think exactly what.

Other winners from the music industry include the EMI Music Sound Foundation's Margaret Orr and Welsh singer and broadcaster Aled Jones.

PJ Harvey latest album, her eighth record Let England Shake, won the Mercury Music Prize in 2011.
