Guildford live music institution the Boileroom has launched a petition to help save it from closure.

The venue is under threat after a new neighbour filed a complaint to the local council requesting a review of its licence.

According to the venue owners, only two people are seeking the review with the ‘direct intention and request that the council revoke our licence with immediate effect’.

On the petition’s web page, the Boileroom said: ‘As I’m sure everyone is aware, it is hard running an independent venue with no funding.

‘We have all read recently about other local venues that have come under fire from situations similar to ours, and other independent venues that are struggling under the recession, and we are no different - it is a challenge.’

The Boileroom is the latest grass roots venue to be threatened with closure since the start of the year. Both Manchester’s Night and Day Café and Bristol’s Fleece have been targeted by similar licence reviews.

Earlier in the year, Independent Venue Week took place to highlight the plight of the grass roots venue.
