Peter Christopherson, a founding member of pioneering post-punk noise band Throbbing Gristle has died in his sleep aged 55 at his home in Bangkok.
Throbbing Gristle are credited with being the creators of the industrial music genre. The band split up in 1981 before reuniting in 2005 for a series of shows and an album Part Two. The band pushed at the boundaries of taboo, with Chistopherson an eager contributor, providing him with the nickname "Sleazy".
Christopherson also paved the way for the use of samplers in live performance, having a modified keyboard-triggered sampler before the introduction of the first Fairlight sampler to the UK.
As well as his musical career, Christopherson was a designer photographer and artist who worked for Hipgnosis, the design company responsible for classic record sleeves for Peter Gabriel - Peter Gabriel III) Pink Floyd (Pink Floyd – Wish You Were Here), The Pretty Things, UFO, 10cc, Bad Company, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Yes, Genesis, ELO and XTC.
Christopherson and his partner John Balance worked together on projects by the band Psychic TV before forming their own project, Coil. Balance died in 2004 and Christpherson relocated to Thailand and developed a solo project: The Threshold HouseBoys Choir.
