The record, which is the duo’s 12th, was produced by one-time Madonna collaborator and DJ Stuart Price and is due to come out on 15 July.

Electric will be released on their own x2 label via Kobalt Label Services after the band parted ways with Parlophone earlier in the year. The band and imprint had previously enjoyed a working relationship lasting almost 30 years.

Hugo Turquet, BMG Chrysalis A and R Director, said: ‘It is a very rare band to still be so relevant at this stage in their career. Electric really is a classic Pet Shop Boys dance-floor album.’

Angela Becker, Pet Shop Boys manager, said: ‘Choosing BMG was an easy decision. Ben [Bodie, vice-president of A and R at BMG,] and Hugo’s passion and feel for Pet Shop Boys’ history alongside the company’s clear vision for their future make this an exciting partnership.’

Pet Shop Boys are thought to be one of the most successful British songwriting pairings in the history of pop having sold 50m records in their career.

The duo have also received two BRIT Award and Ivor Novello awards as well as receiving outstanding contribution prizes from both awards.
