Independent publisher peermusic has entered a joint venture with Brighton-based sales and distribution company Republic Of Music.

Founded over 90 years ago, peermusic is the largest independent music publisher in the world. Its extensive catalogue ranges from classics including You Are My Sunshine and You Raise Me Up to Katy Perry’s Firework and Rihanna’s Umbrella.

It also holds the rights to the catalogues of iconic songwriters including Buddy Holly, Donovan and Hoagy Carmichael.

Republic Of Music was founded in 2007 and handles physical and digital distribution for a roster of labels such as City Slang, Secretly Distribution, Lucky Number and Moshi Moshi.

It also offers services including manufacturing, synchronisations, label services, in-house design, press and online marketing.

Speaking about the venture, European president of peermusic Nigel Elderton said: 'The team at Republic of Music have built a very impressive sales, labels services and distribution company and it was a logical step for them to want to create a publishing company.

'I am delighted that they have chosen peermusic to partner them and to take advantage of the many opportunities that come their way through ROM’s label activities.'

Keith McColl of Republic Of Music added: 'This is an exciting opportunity for us to grow a forward thinking publishing company. Our intention is to be artist friendly with how we operate in our deals.

'We are ideally positioned to spot talent very early on due to the fact that we have access to a wonderful pool of music via the labels that we work with on a distribution basis.'
