One Direction are the latest act to reach 1bn streams on Spotify, joining a global elite of 14 artists to hit this milestone.

The boy band broke the one billion stream barrier one week after the release of their latest chart topping album, Four.

One Direction join the likes of Coldplay and Ed Sheeran in reaching this achievement.

Kevin Brown, Spotify’s head of label relations for Europe, said: ‘Not surprisingly, One Direction are one of the most popular bands on Spotify, with many millions of dedicated fans listening to their music. We congratulate '1D' on joining the very select club of artists who are true streaming superstars.’

Their latest album clocked up 142,000 sales during its first week of release. It follows in the footsteps of their latest album, Midnight Memories, the biggest selling album of 2013.
