One Direction have set a new Spotify music streaming record with their new single Drag Me Down.
The boy band’s latest release - the first without former member Zayn Malik - which came out on Friday 31 July, was streamed 4.75m times on its first day, creating a new record for the highest number within one day.
One Direction’s latest track beat the record for the number of streams on one day previously set by Wiz Khalifa’s See You Again. The single was streamed 4.26m times on 17 April.
Drag Me Down is also the first track ever to hit number one on Spotify’s Global Chart on its first day of release. Calvin Harris’ Blame previously reached the top within two days of first emerging.
One Direction's latest song is the first to be taken from the group’s upcoming fifth album.
Meanwhile, PRS for Music recently launched Streamfair, a new initiative aimed at raising awareness of the need for legislative reform to ensure music creators are properly paid for the use of their music.
