The number of shops selling physical music increased by 20.4 percent in 2014, new figures from the Entertainment Retailers Association (ERA) showed.

According to the organisation’s annual yearbook, the number of outlets reached 10,391 during last year.

The number of physical retailers selling video and games also increased across 2014.

Kim Bayley, ERA chief executive, said: ‘This is an extraordinary result which means that UK consumers have a greater choice of outlets from which to buy music, video and games than ever before.

‘From specialist chains and independents, through to supermarkets and fashion stores, to internet retailers, download and streaming services we can all now access music, video and games wherever or whenever we want.’

At the same time, the research found digital and online services continue to pick up pace, with the latter’s share of music sales reaching 49.8 percent compared with 50.2 percent in physical.

The market value of music streaming stood at £175m in 2014, up by 65.1 percent from the £106.m recorded in 2013.
