Now That’s What I Call Music! 85 has become 2013’s fastest selling album after taking the top spot in the UK albums chart.

According to Official Charts Company (OCC) figures, the album went straight to number one after selling 317,000 copies during its first week of release.

The compilation sold almost twice as many units as Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories, 2013’s fastest selling artist album. The record sold 165,000 copies during its first week of release back in May.

Number 85 in the Now! series outsold its predecessor Now! 84 which shifted 262,000 copies in its first week.

Martin Talbot, chief executive at the OCC, said: ‘The impressive opening sales of Now That’s What I Call Music! 85 underline just how, 30 years on from when it was first launched, the Now! series continues to be as popular as ever.’

Now That’s What I Call Music! 85 features 44 Top 40 hits, including Get Lucky, Daft Punk's million selling number one single.

Previous data released by the OCC showed that vinyl was behind a resurgence in sales for independent record shops in the first half of the year.

The figures revealed that independent record shops saw an increase of 44 percent in sales in the first half of 2013 when compared with the same period last year.
