The four Nordic countries of Denmark, Norway, Finland and Sweden are forerunners in the shift to digital music consumption, a new study finds.
The Polaris Nordic Digital Music Survey 2014 found that 78 percent of internet users aged 15 to 65 – around 13.8 million people - have used digital music services, with eight million of them having used streaming music services in the last year and 3.5 million paying for downloads or streaming subscriptions within that time period.
Spotify alone is estimated to have seven million users in Denmark, Norway, Finland and Sweden, while free-to-view platform YouTube attracts 11.8 million - the largest audience figures across the region.
The study also found that of the 3.5 million paying digital music consumers – around 20 percent of the study’s target group - Norway takes the lead before Sweden, Denmark and Finland.
The Polaris Nordic Digital Music Survey was conducted in Denmark, Norway, Finland and Sweden in June 2014.
The online survey targeted a thousand internet users aged 15 to 65 per country.
It was commissioned by the three Nordic collecting societies for music authors – Koda (Denmark), Teosto (Finland) and Tono (Norway) – that in 2013 formed the Polaris Nordic Alliance.
