Potter joined the legendary prog band in 1969 and worked with them on their breakthrough album The Least We Can Do is Wave to Eachother. He left during the recording of their follow-up set He to H, Who am the Only One but he stayed in touch with band, playing on lead singer Peter Hammill’s debut album.
He rejoined Van der Graaf Generator in 1977.
Throughout the 70s, Potter built a reputation as a gifted musician and songwriter, working with the likes of Jeff Beck, Chuck Berry and Steve Swindells. From 1979 to 1981 he was in the critically acclaimed band The Tigers, with Tony Jacks and Nick Coler. Together they toured all over America and Europe.
During the 80s and 90s Potter continued to record and tour with Hammill and played bass for The K-Group and Duncan Browne. He also started a solo career, focusing on electronic music. His albums include The Long Hello Volume II (1980), The Blue Zone (1990) and Dreamworld (1997) – all of which were remastered and reissued in 2009.
Potter died at home on 17 January and will be sadly missed by his family, friends and all who knew him.
