UK music charity Sound & Music has launched a new podcast series aimed at re-establishing the rules surrounding contemporary music.
Episodes will explore the ‘cacophonous stories’ of new music, how health issues can lead a composer down a different path and the way a city comes together to celebrate its artists.
The charity says the series, dubbed Chest of Toys, is a response to ‘composer-focused drill-down approach’ found in other contemporary music podcasts.
It gets its name from an offhand remark from an attendee of a new music event, who said the ‘problem' with so much contemporary music is that it sounds like ‘a chest of children’s toys coming down the stairs’.
Chest of Toys is hosted by The Riot Ensemble’s Aaron Holloway-Nahum and produced by Chris Elcombe. It airs monthly on Sound & Music’s new music events site and blog The Sampler - a space for audiophiles to share their stories, inspirations, playlists and events.
Listen to episode one below, featuring violinist, composer and improviser Alison Blunt discussing her unlikely path and health problems that led her from the Birmingham Conservatoire to where she is today.
Episode two will be released on The Sampler on 1 May and will focus on the Chicago new music scene and Ear Taxi festival.
