The award is granted for the choir group’s New Music Programme, which includes upcoming commissions from three young British composers and are being supported through PRS for Music Foundation’s grants for organisations.

The three distinctive works by Vikki Stone, Kerry Andrew and James Rose are being created with the aim of engaging the imagination and stretching the performance abilities of the National Youth Choirs’ members, aged between nine and 25.

The finished pieces will be premiered at the Royal Albert Hall, London, on 10 April 2016 as part of a festival programme celebrating British choral music from the Renaissance to the present day, with subsequent performances scheduled for venues across the UK, China and Hong Kong.

This will be the second time the organisation has received the David Bedford Music Education Award, their first being in 2014 for the acclaimed project and work She Lost My Crossed Heart with world record breaking beatboxer Shlomo.

Vanessa Reed, executive director, PRS for Music Foundation said: ‘Congratulations to the National Youth Choir of Great Britain for being selected for the latest David Bedford Award. We look forward to following the progress of this exciting project which is enabling members of the National Youth Choir to work with three very talented composers who have a strong track record of working with young people.”

Ben Parry, director, National Youth Choirs of Great Britain, added: ‘Our New Music Programme aims to create new works that challenge and inspire our young singers whilst increasing the scope of choral music to engage a wider audience. We are delighted that our collaboration with three highly individual young British composers has been recognised by the PRS for Music Foundation and are honoured to receive the David Bedford Music Education Award.”

The David Bedford Music Education Award is given four times a year by PRS for Music Foundation to exceptional education projects involving composers and new music which they have funded.
