English folk singer and musician Nancy Kerr has been named as folk singer of the year at BBC Radio 2’s Folk Awards.

The 16th annual ceremony took place last night (22 April) at the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff to celebrate the cream of the current crop of artists working within the genre.

The prize for best duo went to Josienne Clarke and Ben Walker while the accolade for best group was taken by the Young ‘uns.

Prize for best original song was won by Peggy Seeger and Calum MacColl for their Swim to the Star.

Bob Shennan, controller of Radio 2, 6 Music, Asian Network and Director, BBC Music said: ‘The Radio 2 Folk Awards is an annual celebration of the nation’s longstanding devotion to the folk music scene.

‘It is wonderful to be able to bring together such a high calibre line-up of artists and recognise their achievements over the past 12 months. Congratulations to all the winners and nominees.’

The evening featured live performances by an array of folk acts including The Rails, Josienne Clarke and Ben Walker and lifetime achievement recipient, Yusuf/Cat Stevens.
