The number of music streams grew by 137 percent in 2013, new research from Next Big Sound has revealed.
According to the music data analytics firm, the amount of social media users to become fans of artists via online platforms such as Facebook or Twitter increased by 5.63 percent during 2013 to top six billion.
The number of streams increased from 93bn to 223bn in 2013, although Next Big Sound said this rise was partly due to its new monitoring partnership with Spotify.
In the research, Next Big Sound said that despite the impact of new stats from Spotify, ‘we found that streaming overall has become a vastly more popular method of consumption amongst music fans'.
‘Fans are using these sites to follow, interact with, learn more, and listen to the artists they love. From up-and-coming, to mega stars, it is imperative that artists take advantage of social reach and understand that this is where a significant amount of the interaction between artists and fans takes place.’
The research also examined the performance of pop stars over various social media platforms.
Shakira gained the most new likes on Facebook with 18.1m while Katy Perry topped Twitter with 18.3m new followers.
