Music was the most pirated of all online media during the three months to end of January this year, new figures from Ofcom show.

According to the regulator’s latest online copyright infringement tracker research, reported by the Guardian, 386m files were pirated during the quarter - and 280m of this illegally accessed content was music.

Overall piracy relating to the digital consumption of entertainment including books, video games and computer software, increased in the period when compared with the previous three months.

One in six or 18 percent of internet users aged 12 and over illegally accessed 386m files in the three months. This figure was up on the 16 percent guilty of the same behaviour in the last quarter.

Further findings from the report revealed that of this 18 percent, about five percent only ever used illegal services to source entertainment online.
