Glen Rowe, Muse’s tour director, has pipped PRS for Music’s Amanda Gentle to the post in the music category of the 2016 Creative & Cultural Skills Awards.
He received the prize for Music Skills due to his outstanding commitment to educating young music professionals and creating an innovative new music academy for touring professionals.
Rowe, who is also the tour director for the Grammy Award-winning rock band Muse, developed the Cato Academy with a keen focus on hands-on training and connecting current touring professionals with students.
Many Cato graduates have since gone on to work at UK festivals including Leeds and Reading, Download and Glastonbury.
On receiving the award from MOBO’s Kanya King and Live Nation’s Paul Latham, Rowe said: 'To be recognised by CC Skills and to be selected from amongst the other wonderful candidates to win the Music Skills Award is a real privilege. The Cato Academy is a passion of mine – we’re training individuals who will become the nuts and bolts of show business.
'This award emphasises the importance of backstage crew and reinforces the fact that being a “roadie” is a real job, which requires technical understanding, specific skills, and a lot of hard work and dedication. Thank you to all the teachers, sponsors, friends and students of Cato Academy – this wouldn’t have been possible without your support.'
Awards shortlister Amanda Gentle successfully designed Inside Track, a ground-breaking recruitment, assessment process and programme for PRS for Music.
The two-year rotational development programme gives five people with little or no previous music industry experience of knowledge the opportunity to learn about the commercial areas of the business within collective rights management.
It was launched in November and attracted 436 applications from graduates and non-graduates and PRS for Music staff.
The Creative & Cultural Skills Awards ceremony took place at The Backstage Centre production facility and recording studio in Essex on 2 March.
