Mumford & Sons’ latest album Babel is the fastest selling US debut of 2012, new figures show.

The record, which is the second album by the British band, sold 600,000 copies in its first week of release in the US, Nielsen Soundscan statistics revealed.

Babel is the first number one for the band in the US and the first for the band’s label Glassnote Records.

The number one chart position is mirrored on this side of the Atlantic with Babel selling 159,000 copies last week to reach the UK’s top spot.

Mumford & Sons’ Babel also received the most US Spotify streams in one week.
