Weatherley, IP Adviser to the Prime Minister, has today published the Copyright Education and Awareness report which outlines actions to counteract copyright infringement and promote better understanding of IP.

In it, he commends the efforts of rightsholders to educate the public about copyright but recommends that greater measures and coordination would be welcomed.

He called on government, industry stakeholders and educators to work together to formally introduce IP education into the national curriculum.

He also urged the Intellectual Property Office (IPO) to coordinate cross-sector IP working groups and awareness programmes to reach out to the wider public.

Together with the Creative Industries Council, he said the IPO should set out a strategic outreach plan by the first quarter of 2015, with a cross-industry working group convening quarterly to review its progress.

He also suggested that greater measurement of the public’s IP perceptions and behaviours are needed to help tackle copyright infringement.

‘Getting education right on IP awareness is paramount if, as a country, we are to property respect the value of the creative industries,’ he said.

‘I have now submitted three reports to the Prime Minister on various aspects of Intellectual Property and I hope that my education report will help shape the future of both IP education and awareness across the country.’

Responding to the report, PRS for Music’s chief executive Robert Ashcroft said: ‘UK musicians have dominated the global charts for decades. Their success is made possible by copyright which sustains the creative industries – the fastest growing sector in the UK and a key provider of jobs and economic growth.

‘Consumer education has an important role to play in building understanding and respect for copyright. By working in partnership, government and industry can shape a positive environment for our creative industries to continue to thrive in the future.’

In his capacity as the Prime Minister’s IP Adviser, Weatherley has published two other reports; Follow the Money, which addresses the detrimental impact of illegal websites profiting from advertising, and Search Engines and Piracy, which outlines the shortcomings of search engine providers in the fight against online piracy.
