TGE 2014: PRS for Music Foundation’s Momentum Music Fund has been a ‘catalyst to many good things’, an artist manager has said.

JulianDeane, manager of Momentum-backed band the Wytches, made the comments during a Great Escape panel discussing the impact of the fund 12 months after it launched at last year’s festival.

He said: ‘With the Wytches, the budget was always going to be tight. They don’t like bands on major labels ... we’re doing a US tour and without this initial foundation funding we couldn’t have done it. It’s been a catalyst to so many good things.’

Julian added that the support enabled the band to sign a deal with Heavenly Recordings based on ‘what they are and not what they wanted them to be’.

The band is one of 33 artists to have received backing from the Momentum Music Fund across five rounds of funding.

Talking of the application process, Vanessa Reed, executive director of the foundation, said: ‘We try as far as possible to not base it on how the form is filled out. We listen to the music rather than looking to see if you’ve got an English degree.’

She added: ‘For us, we want to make sure this pilot develops into something sustained and permanent. This collaboration with the music industry has to continue.’

Momentum offers grants of £5,000-£15,000 for artists and bands to break through to the next level of their career. Head to the PRS for Music Foundation's website for more details.

The foundation’s fund has been shortlisted for the 35th Arts and Business (A&B) Awards. Read the full story.

The organisation is also hosting a showcase at the Great Escape conference in Brighton this afternoon (9 May). Check out the full line up.
