British composer Michael Nyman will unveil a new work paying tribute to the victims of the Hillsborough tragedy at the Liverpool Biennial.

Symphony, No 11: Hillsborough Memorial, will be performed by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra on 5 July during the opening weekend of the Biennial event.

The music is based on music the composer was writing on the day of the tragedy when 96 football fans lost their lives during a crowd crush at an FA Cup semi-final on 15 April 1989.

In a statement, Nyman said he ‘hopes it will make a small but significant contribution to the healing process still necessary for the families of the lost fans’.

The work takes inspiration from his 1985 work Memorial which became well known via its use in Peter Greenaway's The Cook, The Thief, His Wife And Her Lover.

This latest version of the composition includes a new vocal in which Kathryn Rudge will sing the names of the 96 Liverpool fans who lost their lives, accompanied by music the composer was recording on the afternoon of the Hillsborough tragedy.

A recording of this new work will be available to listen to throughout the Biennial event.

Arts Council England, PRS for Music Foundation and the International Festival for Business 2014 are all supporting the project.
