They are joined by Aphex Twin, Benjamin Clementine, C Duncan, Gaz Coombes, Slaves, SOAK and Wolf Alice, whose albums have also made the grade.

The shortlist, chosen from an entry of over 290 albums, was announced by presenter and broadcaster Lauren Laverne during her show on BBC Radio 6Music.

The Mercury Prize recognises and celebrates new music in the UK with recent winners including Scotland’s Young Fathers, electronic singer songwriter James Blake and indie act alt-j.

Albums by British and Irish artists with a UK release date between 9 September 2014 and 25 September 2015 were eligible in this year's shortlist.

The awards ceremony will take place on 20 November in the Radio Theatre at Broadcasting House in London, and will be hosted by Laverne.

Simon Frith, chair of the Mercury Prize judges, said: ‘This year’s Mercury Prize shortlist includes seven debut albums and it celebrates artists from every stage of their careers.

‘These musicians come from a fascinating variety of musical places, cultures and histories. What they have in common is the ambition and the craft, the ideas and the imagination to make great music!’
