In The Long Tail Chris Anderson placed emphasis on people finding stuff rather than stuff finding people. But in an age where the sheer volume of places to find music is beyond comprehension, let alone the tunes themselves, where do you start if you want to get your music heard?
Chris Carey, Economist, PRS for Music
Chris Carey is an economist at PRS for Music, where he is responsible for analysing and interpreting music trends and providing economic insight to stakeholders and industry professionals. He has spoken at various conferences, universities, and has co-authored the influential 'Adding up the Music Industry' publication. His other research interests include the live music industry, the issues facing investment in emerging artists and the role of government intervention in promoting the arts. An entrepreneur at heart, Chris also manages two bands and runs a small record label.
Erik Nielsen, Wingnut Music
Erik Nielsen emigrated from the USA to the UK to launch Marillion's first official website and online store in 1997, later taking on the role of business manager for their 'cottage empire' - growing it from a simple website into its own mini-industry, which includes private recording studios and offices, the online music and merchandise store Racket Records, indie label Intact Records; launching the Direct-to-Consumer and 360-Degree business models 10 years before they were buzzwords.
Branching out in 2008, his Wingnut Music consultancy - which counts Elton John, James Blunt, and leading digital analysts Music Ally amongst his clients - works with artists and organisations on 'holistic' marketing and digital strategies, artist management, and keeping a step ahead of the changing music industry. Based in Oxford he also manages breaking band A Genuine Freakshow, and is a board member of the Music Managers Forum.
Rhiannon Price, Co-Founder, Green House Group
Rhiannon Price is the co-founder of Green House Group, a collective of artists, designers, developers and marketeers whose clients include The Secret Garden Party, Blissfields Festival, Chess Club Records, The Flowerpot and Cake Media. Green House Group has also released Track In The Box, a daily music newsletter, and Record Drop, a vinyl and mp3 bundle shop, as well as co-organising The River Rat Pack Tour. Most recently Green House launched Turf Records.
Stefan Baumschlager, Last.fm
Stefan Baumschlager has been with Last.fm for over 4 years as Head Label Liaison. He manages relationships with all key label partners globally and leads the music team since October 09. Prior to Last.fm, Stefan held several roles in radio and worked closely with Gilles Peterson, Karen Pearson, Somethin-Else Productions and Austria’s ORF. He holds a MA in Communications and a BA (hons) in Media Studies from the University of Westminster in London.
Stuart Dredge, Music Ally
Stuart Dredge is a UK-based journalist and blogger covering digital music, mobile apps and entertainment and consumer tech. With over 12 years experience he has worked across various technology-related magazines, websites and blogs. Currently he is freelancing for three main sites: Music Ally, Mobile Entertainment and Recombu and also contributes to The Sunday Times, What Mobile and Mobile Media
Tony Byrne, Finance Director, MFlow
Tony has been involved in online businesses for the last 15 years and was one of the founders of Mflow. Most recently he was Head of Finance for BT where he was responsible for managing all commercial aspects of their retail broadband business. Prior to this he has been Finance Director for COLT telecom as well as worked for a number of venture capital/investment businesses. Tony is a qualified Chartered Accountant and holds an MA in mathematics from Oxford University.
Mflow was started in 2008 by Oleg Fomenko, Tony Byrne, Thong Nguyen, Atan Burrows and Don Jenkins. It brings together social networking, music sharing, online radio and a music store.
