Matthew Herbert will be one of six music artists paying tribute to William Shakespeare to mark the 400th anniversary since his death.
Organised by Eurovision Songwriting Contest parent, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), the New Shakespeare Songbook project will see songwriters from Austria, France, Norway, Slovenia, Switzerland and the UK coming together to celebrate the bard.
Renowned experimental artist Matthew was alongside French rapper Oxmo Puccino and Norwegian singer-songwriter Ane Brun in responding to a challenge to set Shakespeare’s texts to music.
Jean Philip De Tender, BU media director, said: ‘Shakespeare is one of the pillars of European culture and the richness of his texts is reflected in the wonderful creative responses from EBU Members working with some of today’s most imaginative artists.’
Previously, Matthew’s experimental music work has included DJing with records made from food and One Pig, an album recording the life cycle of a farmed pig from birth to plate.
The celebration will be broadcast in various forms across Europe as part of a wider commemoration of Shakespeare’s work.
