Martin James Bartlett wins BBC Young Musician 2014

17 year-old pianist Martin James Bartlett has been named as the BBC Young Musician 2014.

17 year-old pianist Martin James Bartlett has been named as the BBC Young Musician 2014.

Martin beat percussionist Elliott Gaston-Ross (aged 15) and recorder-player Sophie Westbrooke (15) to take the prize.

He performed a Rachmaninov’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini in front of a judging panel including composer James MacMillan, conductor Alice Farnham, pianist Alice Sara Ott, percussionist Colin Currie and recorder-player Michala Petri.

According to his biography, Martin has been playing the piano since he was six.

The three finalists performed with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra conducted by Kirill Karabits in front of a live audience

This year the competition announced an ambassadorial role for Nicola Benedetti, the prize’s former winner and internationally acclaimed violinist.

Other previous winners and finalists include Thomas Adès, Alison Balsom, Thomas Carroll, Natalie Clein, Michael Collins, Nicholas Daniel and Benjamin Grosvenor.
