Mark Simpson has been named as the new composer in association for the BBC Philharmonic.

At 26 Mark is believed to be one of the youngest composers to be given a formal role with a major British orchestra.

The Liverpool-born composer will work with the BBC Philharmonic from September until 2019.

Over that period, he will compose three new scores and collaborate with the orchestra on a number of high profile projects.

Mark said: ‘I'm thrilled to accept this role as composer in association with the BBC Philharmonic. To be given the opportunity to develop my work and build a solid relationship with an orchestra of such calibre, over this time period, is a dream. I can't wait for it to begin.’

The role is a new one for the orchestra and replaces the previous title of conductor/composer, currently held by HK Gruber.

Mark’s works include A mirror-fragment… performed by orchestras in the UK and Germany and sparks composed for the opening of the 2012 Last Night of the Proms.

Previously, he signed an exclusive publishing agreement with Boosey and Hawkes when he was 24, and was a winner of the BBC Proms Young Composers Competition in 2006.
