British composer Mark-Anthony Turnage CBE has become patron of the Manchester-based contemporary music ensemble Psappha.
He will remain patron throughout the ensemble’s 2018/19 season, which kicks off in September.
Psappha’s last patron was Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, whose works will continue to feature in the ensemble’s new season concert programme.
Turnage said: ‘I’m really pleased that Psappha has asked me to become their new patron. It’s an honour to take on the position from Max after his 21 years in the role.
‘Last November Psappha gave a stunning performance of my Slide Stride in Manchester with a benchmark reading that I doubt will be bettered in a long while, if ever. The group’s commitment to living composers is a vital element in British musical life and I’m looking forward to supporting these brilliant musicians and their work in the future.’
Formed in 1991 by artistic director Tim Williams, Psappha specialises in the performance of work by living composers and in music of the 20th and 21st centuries.
It’s a National Portfolio Organisation for Arts Council England and a Talent Development Partner for PRS Foundation, and is based at St Michael’s in Manchester, a venue it shares with The Hallé.
In related news, Psappha is giving 24 emerging artists the chance to develop their careers with support and mentoring from expert instrumentalists.
Throughout 2018-2019, its Composing For scheme will offer musicians working within four specific disciplines the opportunity to write, record and film a five-minute piece of music under the guidance of an expert musician. Learn more.
