The latest issue of M magazine is out - our last for 2012. And what a year in music it has been! As the world’s gaze turned towards Britain, our songwriters, artists and performers delivered jaw-dropping performances and globe-trotting music.

Two exceptionally talented songwriters came into their own this year: Richard Hawley and Emeli Sandé. Both have triumphed through outstanding performances and releases. For our cover feature we pay homage to Richard Hawley, who chats about his second near-miss with the Mercury Music Prize and his dog-walking-and-songwriting routine. We'll be publishing the feature in full online soon. In the meantime, listen to our Hawley inspired playlist here. You'll hear classic tracks from Lisa-Marie Presley, the Longpigs, Shirley Bassey and Elbow, to name a few...

Women in music
Emeli led the charts with her debut album - the biggest selling record of 2012. But, while the headlines look rosy for women in music, elsewhere the gender gap is still an issue. Debates raged across Europe on equal pay and, closer to home, the male-to-female member ratio at PRS for Music is still skewed in favour of men.

We gathered some leading women in music for a roundtable to hear their experiences. Watch a video interview from the day with songwriter and The Guardian columnist Helienne Lindvall here. You can see our interview with producer and songwriter Adrienne Aiken here. The full Women in Music article is online now and we will be publishing some more video interviews with our leading ladies over the coming weeks.

Dance music: mixing business and beats
In the latest issue of M magazine also talk to some of our dance music writers and publishers about the opportunities and challenges that come with the digital age, and Mark Lawrence, Director of Membership & Rights, expands on the work that PRS for Music is doing in this area. Read our interview with 2012's golden DJ/producer Daniel Avery here. And check out the feature too.

UK hip-hop: it's a rap
Finally, 2012 can’t be celebrated fully without highlighting the success of UK hip-hop. Once a marginal concern, it's now blossomed into a vital genre. Respected hip-hop journalist Chantelle Fiddy penned a feature exploring how the genre came to conquer much more than just the charts. Read the feature here and listen to Chantelle's hip-hop playlist right now.

Just Joined
This quarter’s Just Joined feature highlighted new PRS for Music members Peace, AlunaGeorge, The Edmondsons, King Krule and more. Check out our Just Joined inspired playlist at the bottom of the feature to learn more.

We're looking forward to a fun and fruitful 2013, packed with many more interesting features, great new artists and more. We hope you join us!
