Many leading music industry figures have welcomed a new report calling for more action from the UK government on an ‘under-regulated ticketing market’.
Managers of artists such as Mumford & Sons, Arctic Monkeys, One Direction, PJ Harvey and Radiohead have welcomed the review from professor Michael Waterson on online secondary ticketing.
The new report makes nine recommendations calling on the government to enforce existing consumer laws and for secondary ticketing sites to apply the law and take more responsibility.
In the statement, the industry figures said: ‘As revealed by today’s long awaited report from professor Michael Waterson, UK audiences are confused by the ticket-buying process. In the worst instances, they are being ripped off and sold short by industrial-scale online ticket touting.
‘The music business has a significant role to play in driving change, and we are committed to work with partners to promote pro-consumer practices and technologies.’
However, the statement also called for the government to implement 'a Consumer Rights Act that is fit for purpose, and to have the law on ticket resales enforced by Trading Standards'.
Signatories included Craig Newman, ATC Management (Chris Cunningham, Faithless, Warpaint), Ian McAndrew, Wildlife Management (Arctic Monkeys, Royal Blood, The Last Shadow Puppets, Travis) and Adam Tudhope, Everybody’s Management (Mumford & Sons, Laura Marling, Keane).
The government will be responding to the report in due course.
