Mercury Prize nominated Laura Mvula has been appointed as an ambassador for the Youth Music charity.
The Birmingham singer songwriter will join the likes of Myleene Klass, Bill Bailey and Jen Long in becoming an ambassador for the organisation.
Her interest in music and singing developed during her time attending the Youth Music-funded ‘Black Voices’ project.
Laura said: ‘A formative part of my music journey was becoming a member of Black Voices - a five-piece acapella group started by my aunt Carol Pemberton. I started just by helping out behind the scenes and eventually ended up singing with and later writing for them.
‘Black Voices also ran workshops in schools supported by Youth Music, so I’ve seen how funding by Youth Music can be used in creative ways to bring diverse music to young people.’
The charity has just launched a new fundraising campaign, ‘Give a Gig’, asking music fans, artists, venues and promoters to put on a gig to raise funds for the charity or donate some proceeds from gigs already planned.
Youth Music supports almost 400 music projects around the country, providing music-making opportunities for an estimated over 90,000 children.
