Many thought the indie rockers had peaked in the noughties after scoring eight top 20 hits including I Predict a Riot, Everyday I Love You Less and Less and the chart-topper Ruby.

However, the Leeds band’s fifth studio offering Education, Education, Education & War has put them back in pole position, giving them the second number one album of their career.

The Kaisers have also returned to the singles chart with the appropriately titled Coming Home, their first top 40 appearance since the Mark Ronson-produced Never Miss a Beat in 2008.

ITV’s rival show The X Factor has been enjoying recent chart success too via last year’s winner Sam Bailey and her debut album The Power of Love.

The collection, featuring songs made famous by Jennifer Rush and Shania Twain among others, was a big seller during the week leading up to Mother’s Day.

Storming to the summit, it made Sam the first X Factor winner to top the chart with a debut album since 2008 champion Alexandra Burke.

Meanwhile, superstar George Michael returned to the fray with his live album Symphonica, scoring the seventh number one set of his solo career.

George triumphed in a chart battle with Kylie Minogue, keeping her latest set Kiss Me Once off the top spot.  However, despite settling for runner-up position the pop princess has now amassed an impressive 15 UK top ten albums since making her debut in 1988.

Elsewhere, Elbow’s sixth studio offering The Take Off and Landing of Everything rocketed to pole position amid critical acclaim.

Surprisingly, it is the band’s first to gain chart-topper status, despite the five-piece having won the 2008 Mercury Music Prize for The Seldom Seen Kid and the ongoing popularity of radio favourite One Day Like This.

Retro songstress Paloma Faith has been busy too with her third album A Perfect Contradiction peaking at number two.

The Londoner additionally scored her second top ten hit with Can’t Rely on You, co-written and produced by Pharrell Williams, certainly a man with the Midas touch at the moment.

Pharrell’s own monster hit Happy continues its huge global success, currently enjoying a seventh week at the top of the US Billboard charts.

Over on the American albums chart, the soundtrack of animated movie Frozen is spending a ninth non-consecutive week at the summit.  The Disney disc features the Academy Award winning song Let It Go, currently a stateside top five smash for Broadway star Idina Menzel.

Finally, the Official Charts Company has confirmed Sigma as this week’s UK singles chart-toppers with Nobody to Love, their re-working of Kanye West’s Bound 2.

The Leeds based drum 'n' bass duo are the latest in a line of dance acts making it to the summit this year following recent hits from Clean Bandit, Route 94 and Duke Dumont.
