Julian Lloyd Webber, the internationally renowned cellist and classical composer, has been appointed as the principal of the Birmingham Conservatoire.
According to Birmingham University, Julian will take up the role as work begins on the development of the new £46m Birmingham Conservatoire, due to open in 2017.
Julian said: ‘I am honoured and thrilled to be chosen as the new Principal of Birmingham Conservatoire.
‘The state-of-the-art facilities being built within Birmingham City University’s superb campus will be second to none and superior to many, both throughout the UK and beyond. I am especially excited about the fantastic opportunities that will be on offer to our students.’
He is one of the UK’s most successful classical artists, having performed at the closing ceremony of the London Olympics 2012 and being a recent recipient of the Incorporated Society of Musician’s annual Distinguished Musician Award.
The new Birmingham Conservatoire will be the first purpose built conservatoire in the UK since 1987.
