The John Peel Record Collection has been the most popular art project on digital platform The Space since it launched, a new report has revealed.

According to an independent survey by the Arts Council England, nearly 120,000 music fans visited the online music archive in the six months following its launch back in May of 2012.

An average 30,000 unique users per month visited The Space, of which 20,000 headed to the John Peel Record Collection.

The archive allows users to browse John Peel’s some of the 26,000 LPs in John’s collection, approximately 2,600 albums.

Tom Barker from the John Peel Centre said: ‘We're really happy to see how popular the collection has been. We were feeling our way into it really- exploring whether we could make it work long term and learning just how much amazing stuff is in John's archive.

‘The evaluation shows we've started this amazing journey in the right way, so hopefully we can work out the funding to continue developing it.’

Since it began, the project has seen 100 albums from every letter of John's alphabetically ordered collection of LPs revealed.

John Peel’s family has also selected a single artist or band for a short video each week, introduced by John's wife, Sheila.
