Solo artist and Rudimental collaborator John Newman has hit the top of the charts with his debut album Tribute.

According to the Official Charts Company, the singer songwriter beat pop veterans Sir Paul McCartney and Cher to take the number one spot.

The Yorkshire born singer enjoyed his first number one single by providing guest vocals on Rudimental’s hit Feel the Love. He’s gone on to hit the top spot again with his solo effort Love Me Again and enjoy another top ten single with Cheating.

John said: ‘It’s such an amazing thing for an artist to have a number one album, especially on a debut.

‘It means so much to me and I just want to say thank you to everyone who has supported me and helped make this happen. Can't wait to see everyone on tour next week!’

Elsewhere in the album charts, Sir Paul McCartney entered at three with his sixteenth solo album, New.

Chart veteran Gary Numan debuted at number 20 with his 20th studio album, Splinter (Songs From A Broken Mind) while UK rapper Giggs entered the charts at 21 with his third album When Will It Stop.

Meanwhile in the singles chart, US act OneRepublic have returned to number one with their song Counting Stars.
