John Lennon’s first home has been sold at an auction at Liverpool’s Cavern Club for £480,000.

According to news reports, an anonymous American Beatles fan paid over the odds for the property.

The house, 9 Newcastle Road in Wavertree, Liverpool, was originally expected to sell between £150,000 and £250,000.

The Beatles star lived in the three bedroom property until he was five years old. It is thought that many of his songs were inspired by memories from the house.

Andrew Brown from Countrywide Property said: ‘There was a lot of interest in the property before the auction from potential buyers who lived in the UK and internationally.

‘The auction was very exciting with a number of keen buyers bidding for the property, and we are delighted to have sold such an iconic piece of The Beatles and Liverpool's history.’

The previous owner is believed to have preserved many of the house's original sixties features.
