Joan Armatrading and Norma Waterson will be honoured with Lifetime Achievement Awards at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards 2016.

Taking place on April 27 at the Royal Albert Hall, London, the event will celebrate the great and the good of the folk music scene with Eliza Carthy, Sam Lee and Rosie Hood among the other shortlisted artists.

Songwriter Joan Armatrading has been one of the leading voices in British music since the seventies, blending folk with rock and jazz styles to write songs like Weakness In Me, Love & Affection and Drop the Pilot.

Norma Waterson has been a folk music artist since the sixties and her first vocal performances with North Yorkshire group, The Watersons. Norma's influence has been felt throughout British folk music for decades, via solo work, her work with Waterson:Carthy and The Gift Band with daughter Eliza Carthy and husband Martin Carthy.

The Good Tradition Award will be given to John McCusker - for his contribution to the preservation, dissemination and progression of traditional music over a number of years.

Commenting, Joan Armatrading said: ‘I was surprised but delighted to hear that I was being given a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Radio 2 Folk Awards.

‘I have heard people say that awards don't mean much to them but for me, being given an award means that I am being told that my music is being appreciated. As a singer/songwriter that's one of the main things I'm asking for.’
