Jarvis Cocker will help open the Sheffield Doc/Fest 2013 with The Big Melt, a film and musical celebrating 100 years since stainless steel was discovered.

The film, which will be shown on 12 June, is a documentary directed by Martin Wallace, a long-term collaborator of Cocker. It tells the story of Sheffield’s steel industry which is celebrating its centenary this year.

His film features footage from the BFI alongside a soundtrack directed by Cocker and featuring some of South Yorkshire’s musical luminaries including Richard Hawley, Warp’s Forgemasters and the City of Sheffield Brass Band.

In a statement, the Pulp frontman said: ‘I only hope that we can pay proper homage to the extraordinary individuals featured in this footage. Our aim is to melt faces (and hearts) and to blow minds. With maybe a bit of smelting thrown in for good measure. The jesses are so off.’

The event takes place at Sheffield’s Crucible Theatre and kickstarts four days and nights of screenings and showcases.

Elsewhere on the opening night Pussy Riot - a Punk Prayer will be premiered at Sheffield’s Showroom Cinema. The film highlights the performance and subsequent trial of the infamous Russian feminist punk band.

Find out more information on the festival’s line up and how to get tickets for the various events from the Doc/Fest’s website.
