James Warren Sylvester de Wolfe, of the De Wolfe publishing house, has sadly passed away, aged 93.
James, who was born in 1924, joined his father’s publishing business in 1947, having served with the Royal Air Force during the Second World War.
During the fifties and sixties he travelled across Europe, the US and the rest of the world, establishing the company as an international concern.
De Wolfe is often credited as the first ever library music catalogue, and during James’ tenure, it established lasting relationships with the Hollywood movie business and the advertising world.
Productions from Monty Python and Dr Who to Dawn of the Dead all called on music from the De Wolfe library.
In 1979, James founded Angel Recording Studios in Islington, London. The studio has continued and is now a globally recognised recording and mixing complex, which has hosted Adele, Elbow, The Doves and Labrinth among others.
A statement from PRS for Music said: ‘PRS for Music was saddened to hear of the loss of James de Wolfe.
‘From his founding of Angel Recording Studios to growing de Wolfe Music into an international business, he had a huge impact on the UK music industry and will be greatly missed. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time.’
