HMV reportedly sold one turntable per minute in the week leading up to Christmas.
The Scotsman reported that the UK retailer was responding to the ever-increasing demand for vinyl as more and more shops start stocking the musical format.
Ian Topping, HMV chief executive, said: ‘Entertainment products form a major part of the Christmas shopping list. The gift of the year in 2015, though, has to be a turntable as we see a huge resurgence in the sales of vinyl.
Official Charts Company data, backed up by comments from the BPI’s Gennaro Castaldo, suggest that we’re on track to see vinyl sales reach the two million mark in 2015. This figure is up from the 205,000 LPs sold during 2007.
The so-called vinyl revival has been a much covered news story in 2015 with Tesco choosing to begin stocking the format in selected stores and the Official Charts Company launching the first dedicated vinyl chart. Amazon also stated that its best-selling Christmas item was the Jensen all-in-one turntable.
Elsewhere, research from the BPI and the Entertainment Retailers’ Association (ERA), revealed that streaming is encouraging a new relationship between digital and physical formats.
Two thirds of music fans see themselves as ‘multi-channellers’, using streaming to discover new music before buying their favourite physical releases, new research claims.
