Film composer Hans Zimmer is to receive the Outstanding Contribution to Music award at the 2013 Classic BRIT Awards.

The composer, who has writer scores for more than 100 films over a 30-year career, will be presented with the prize at the event at the Royal Albert Hall on 2 October.

His previous work includes scores for Hollywood films such as Gladiator, The Dark Knight, Inception and The Lion King.

Hans has previously received an Academy Award, two Golden Globes, four Grammys and a Classic BRIT for his compositions.

Dickon Stainer and Barry McCann, co-chairmen of the Classic BRIT awards committee, said: ‘Hans Zimmer's recent work, including Inception, has been a dominant force for classical music specifically in the digital-download era.

‘It is only appropriate that four years on from his 2009 win for Soundtrack of the Year for The Dark Knight he should receive the Outstanding Contribution to Music at this year's ceremony.’

Last year’s event saw the likes of 20 year-old pianist Benjamin Grosvenor, violinist Nicola Benedetti, classical guitarist Miloš Karadagli and legendary Star Wars film composer John Williams all honoured.
