Gruff Rhys, Super Furry Animals songwriter turned solo artist, has been shortlisted for a book prize for his American Interior travelogue.

The Welsh artist is in the running to win the Gordon Burn Prize, a literary award set up in honour of the late author to recognise the work of those following in his ‘fearless footsteps’.

American Interior, which was also released as an album and film as part of a multi-media project, is Gruff’s account of searching for the grave of a relative, John Evans.

Musician Julian Barratt, poet John Burnside, artist Sarah Lucas, and novelist Benjamin Myers, winner of the 2013 Gordon Burn Prize, are among the judging panel.

Richard Benson and Richard House are among the shortlist in the running for the prize.

The winner will be announced on 10 October.
