The government has announced a £3m fund to support creative and cultural organisations across Northern England.
The scheme allows local projects and enterprises in areas including Cumbria, Manchester, Lancashire, Leeds, Liverpool, Sheffield and Yorkshire to apply for funding of up to £150,000.
The Prime Minister said the new social investment, which will offer a mix of grants and loans, will be open to non-profit, community-based organisations that deliver a positive social impact.
The music industry has welcomed the initiative, with Michael Dugher, the chief executive of umbrella body UK Music, commenting: ‘This announcement from the government is excellent news and builds on the recent creative industries sector deal.
‘We are particularly pleased to see the welcome commitment from ministers to regional cultural development.
‘UK Music is already working closely with city region mayors in Greater Manchester, Liverpool and Sheffield, as well as in other city regions, to help nurture and expand those vibrant and diverse music scenes outside of London.
‘Organisations involved in music should seize this opportunity to get their share of this new fund to help grow our music scene in the North.’
The new fund builds on the £150m invested by government and industry through the recent Industrial Strategy deal for the creative industries.
This follows evidence proving the power of the creative industries to boost economic growth across the country.
In Hull, nearly 800 jobs have been created and almost £220m invested in the city’s tourism and cultural sectors since it was named UK City of Culture 2017.
