Gordon Langford RIP

British composer, arranger and multi-instrumentalist Gordon Langford has sadly passed away, aged 86.

British composer, arranger and multi-instrumentalist Gordon Langford has sadly passed away, aged 86.

He first rose to prominence as a pianist and composer in the sixties, writing and arranging music for BBC programmes including Music in the Air, Melody Around the World and Ronnie Barker’s Lines From My Grandfather’s Forehead.

During the decade, he also appeared at the Royal Festival Hall and Light Music Festivals.

In 1971, Langford won an Ivor Novello Award for his piece, March From the Colour Suite.

He also worked as an orchestrator for several West End musical shows, and on orchestrations for blockbuster films including Raiders of the Lost ArkSuperman IIFirst Great Train RobberyClash of the Titans and Return to Oz.

In 1994 he was commissioned by the BBC to write a Grand Fantasia on La Boheme for the centenary of the Henry Wood Promenade Concerts at the Royal Albert Hall.

Also in 1994, he was awarded the Gold Badge of Merit by British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors (BASCA).

Langford continued his recording, concert and broadcast work until his death on 18 April 2017.
