Glastonbury and the V&A are working together on creating an archive of the music festival documenting its 40 year-plus history.

The archive will collect posters, programmes, film, designs and maps from every year of the event since it started back in 1970.

According to the V&A, the aim is to provide a snapshot of how the festival looked at any particular time. The collection will also be added to after every year providing a ‘living performance archive’.

Festival founder Michael Eavis said: ‘When I set out on this crazy hippy trip 44 years ago, little did I know how this roller coaster would run.

‘But now I have to pinch myself every morning when I wake up to the excitement of another day - heading up a team of the most creative artists anywhere in the world. The V&A is an inspirational space and feels like the natural ‘home’ for our ever-evolving archive so we can really show everyone, not just festival-goers, what we really do.’

Selected highlights from the archive are expected to be on display in the V&A’s Theatre and Performance Galleries from March 2015 - January 2016.

This year's Glastonbury, featuring performances from Arcade Fire and Metallica, is taking place 25-29 June.
