Merseyside music prize The GIT Awards has revealed the winner of this year’s One To Watch Prize is Tayá.

The Toxteth teenage R&B artist was selected by the judging panel having released just a few early recordings.

Now signed to Atlantic Records, she’s been getting early love from BBC 1Xtra and building her live profile with shows at Liverpool Sound City and FestEvol.

She’s also been making transatlantic trips to work with super-producer Rodney Jerkins, the man enlisted by the likes of Beyoncé, Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston.

Yaw Owusu, head of Liverpool International Music Festival (LIMF) and a GIT Award judge, said: ‘Tayá is one of the most exciting talents coming from the city right now.

‘Developing somewhat under the radar for some time, it’s clear she has the total package and we, as a panel, are certain she will make an impact from the off. Make sure you keep your eyes and ears on this young lady!’

She will celebrate her One To Watch win with a live performance at the GIT Award 2016 ceremony on 14 May.

Also on the night, the winner of the GIT Award 2016 Prize will be announced from a shortlist of 12 including Bill Ryder-Jones, Stealing Sheep, Clean Cut Kid, Hooton Tennis Club and TVAM.

This year’s shortlist was selected by a panel including ex-Cocteau Twins member and founder of Bella Union Records Simon Raymonde, Rich Walker, general manager of 4AD, Heavenly Recordings founder Jeff Barrett and BBC 6 Music DJs Gideon Coe and Jon Hillcock.

The event will be hosted by BBC Radio Merseyside punk legend Roger Hill.
