Singer-songwriter Frank Turner has announced a last-minute free show in Newcastle tomorrow night, to make up for the cancellation of the city’s Ignition Festival this weekend.

He will perform at the Newcastle O2 Academy on Saturday 6 August, and fans with festival tickets will be able to get in free. Otherwise, tickets will cost £10 and will be available on the door.

‘We’ve spent the last 24 hours going through a million permeations, trying to cover every aspect, such as location, venue size, age restrictions,’ Turner said. ‘And this is, as far as anyone can tell, the best option.

‘I know it doesn’t replace an outdoor festival, but I think it’s a great effort for the last minute!’ he added.

Ignition Festival was due to run this weekend at Gosforth Park in Newcastle, with Echo and the Bunnymen set to headline. But organisers had to pull out at the last minute.

They posted this message on the festival website:

‘With deepest regret we are now in a position to confirm that Ignition Festival 2011 will not be going ahead. Despite every effort to keep this going after this was cancelled yesterday by Newcastle Racecourse. We have been in discussions with Stephen Savage from Newcastle City Council with regards to re locating the event. Unfortunately this was not possible due to time constraints.’

Organisers are requesting those who bought tickets to send any refund requests to info@i-fest.co.uk.
