Former PRS for Music exec Karen Buse has been appointed as managing director of European society relations at US collection society BMI.

Buse joins the society after serving 28 years at PRS for Music, most recently as executive director of the membership and international department.

While at PRS for Music she helped bring about a record-breaking year in 2016 as the total amount of royalties paid out to composers, songwriters and publishers reached £527.6m.

That same year also saw around 4.3 trillion performances reported worldwide, helping to contribute to that record-breaking figure.

In her new role, Buse will work closely with key European and global performance societies to help grow international revenues for BMI and improve business practices within the organisation.

Ann Sweeney, SVP of international and global policy at BMI said: ‘I have known and worked with Karen for many years and have always admired her depth of experience in collective rights management and her excellent relationships throughout the global performing rights community.’

‘We are thrilled to have her join our team, which will only further enhance our relationships with the many international sister societies that are so important to BMI.’

Earlier this month BMI reported that it had set a new revenue record within the company, generating $1.199bn for the financial year ending in June 2018.
