British folk songwriter James Bay has taken the runner up spot on the BBC Sound of 2015 list.

James Bay is an acoustic performer, who has gained a loyal fanbase from regular appearances at Notting Hill Arts Club in London.

Allegedly discovered after a fan uploaded a video of him performing in a Kentish Town pub, James Bay has gained attention for his gravelled voice and uplifting, gospel-tinged choruses.

Talking to the BBC about his inclusion on ‘best of’ and critics awards lists he said: “I just want to prove I'm worth it. It's a big old world, and there's probably people going ‘well I think so-and-so should have won it’. So I want to show my worth”.

He gathered more fans when he stepped in at the last minute to play a Live Lounge set for Radio 1, after US superstar Lana Del Rey pulled out. He also opened for the Rolling Stones in Hyde Park in 2013.

Yesterday, grime artist Stormzy took third place. DJ Huw Stephens will be revealing the winner tomorrow on BBC Radio 1.
