Facebook has initiated discussions with rightsholders with a view to launching a music video service on its platform, according to reports.

The social media platform is in with music labels about licensing a limited amount of songs that users can upload to their homemade videos, sources have told the New York Times.

The new product, which Facebook has confirmed as Slideshow, helps users create ‘soundtrack options’ and is currently being tested with a limited number of Warner Music Group-owned tracks.

The newspaper said the service could 'be a way to keep music labels happy at a time when they’re frustrated about the volume of unlicensed [user generated content] at YouTube'.

It also ran the following statement from a Facebook spokesperson: ‘We are always testing ways to help people better share their stories with friends.

‘Slideshows are a new way for people to share photos and videos in a creative and succinct way. To date, we’ve been using Facebook-owned music to accompany these slideshows, we will now be testing the use of a limited amount of music from Warner Music Group as soundtrack options.’

Recently, the Official Charts Company and BPI reported an 88 percent rise in music video streams in the UK last year to 26.9 billion, up from 14.3 billion in 2014.
